I received a great Mothers Day story to share with you from Kevin Murtha...
"Lots of Hugs & Loves, the discipline was the Consequences.
When Mom called from work the one who answered was to wash and put the potatoes in the oven. If it didn’t happen dinner was served without potatoes and the Siblings provided the consequences.
Like wise, if dishes weren’t washed the next meal was served on dirty dishes and the siblings…
There was no running to mommy for each little scrape. We brought the 1st Aid kit and she supervised the cleaning of the wound. WE had to apply the stinging Iodine, SHE made sure we covered the entire wound and bandaged it. She would apply the bandage to spots we couldn’t get two hands too.
Laundry was easy, just throw dirty clothes down the 25’ laundry chute. BUT we had to trudge to the cellar and bring back our clean clothes.
We were a frugal family, hand -me-down clothes. little allowance, If we wanted money, it was paper routes and neighborhood yard work. Some Composting, growing our own.
For dessert Mom would mix salad, never iceberg, with fruits, nuts and bits of the vegetables we hated, to acclimate us to them. Always Oil & Vinegar dressing with minimal seasoning.
I am one of 3 brothers that made it to Elderhood, another died young. Mom made it to 93, had a Wake where she talked to others and later passed quietly in her sleep. Her ashes were scattered in the Blue Ridge Mnts of Virginia by a small group after a sharing.
